1.0 INTRODUCTION 

1.1 Company history and brief overview

Proctor and Gamble is an American FMCG multinational corporation formed in 1837 when William Proctor and James Gamble met each other in the city of Cincinnati launching a small business known as P&G. Interestingly, William, who was a candle maker and James a soap maker, met after each was married to the others sister. According to the company’s website PG.com (2017), some of the key dates in the company’s history are as follows;

• In 1879, P&G released their first own branded soap called Ivory followed by the building of their own state of art production facility in 1886.
• In 1923, P&G becomes the first few companies to advertise on commercial radio.
• In 1946, P&G introduces the Tide washing brand which went on become an iconic American detergent and later followed by Crest toothpaste in 1955.
• In 1961, Proctor & Gamble introduces Pampers, the popular disposable baby diaper that has gone on to dominate other brands in that market.
• In 1991, Pantene Pro-V is introduced to the market, going on to become the fastest growing shampoo in all major international markets.
• In 2012, P&G sells Pringles, its only remaining food business brand, to Kellogg’s for US$2.7bn hence exiting the food, snacks and beverages category to focus primarily on household, beauty and personal care products.
• In 2014, P&G divests a further 100 brands remaining with 65 core brands that produced 95% of the company’s profits, reducing its global staff by 15%.
